Summit Engineering Corporation, a sustainable development consultant, summarizes the potential
for renewable energy generation in this area as excellent. They
state that "Battle Mountain and its surrounds have the necessary
infrastructure to provide ready access for renewable energy
projects to an existing electrical transmission grid." The I-80
"Gold Belt" corridor has a concentration of power transmission
lines and infrastructure built in support of area mining.
Renewable energy resources available are solar, geothermal, and
wind power.
They are summarized as follows:
- Wind Power Class 2 areas are readily available for power
generation. An average of 4.0 – 5.2 m/s at a height of 80m
is projected.
- Solar irradiance in Lander County in a range projected to be between 4.31 and 5.25 kWh/m2 per day. In addition, there are an average of 138 clear and 89 partly cloudy days in Battle Mountain.
- Geothermal resources have been identified that surround Battle Mountain. Hot heat (>100ºC) and warm heat-flow wells are in the immediate vicinity of the airport. One geothermal power plant is in operation and another is in the permitting stages in northern Lander County.
